PREPARING TO HONOR ALAN SHEPARD, FIRST US ASTRONAUT
My fellow volunteers at the Space Force Museum at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station chose to hold a special celebration of the anniversary of the first American in space. On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard rode on a Mercury Redstone booster in a suborbital flight some 300 miles into the Atlantic from Cape Canaveral. He went on to fly to the moon on Apollo 14.
WORKING TO CREATE THE EVENT
As one of the group planning this, I was very busy for the past couple of weeks. I had to create a presentation I will give at the event, had to manage the invitations and response tracking, and most importantly had to prepare the blockhouse at Launch Complex 5-6 for tours as part of the celebration.
That blockhouse had been ignored for several years and recently abandoned by NASA, thus we hope to finish folding it into the museum and restore it for visitors. I prepared display stations and many graphics to support the visits we have planned.
SHOULD BE FREE AFTER TUESDAY TO RETURN TO MY WORKSHOP
There won't be too much I have to do once the event wraps up at mid-day, other than take down the graphics and display stations, so I should have no further work to do after the day ends.
